3 Hour Digital "Crash Course" Private Lessons


Our digital "crash course" is the perfect place to start if you are new to digital photography and want to learn the ins and outs of your camera and explore the fundamentals of photography.

This course is also ideal if you want to prepare yourself for taking great photos on your next vacation travels or if you’ve been shooting for a while but still find yourself puzzled over why your images just aren’t coming out the way you want them to.

The class builds from a basic introduction of the camera and its controls, through the settings that control exposure and focus then explores the more creative areas of lenses and composition.

Class Topics:

The Basics: A tour of your camera and the fundamentals of exposure

  • Buttons and Dials: Locating and understanding the physical controls on your camera.
  • Basic Menus and Settings: What about file size, quality, JPG, RAW, TIFF, white balance and ISO?
  • How It Works: What goes on when you take a picture.
  • Exposure: What are shutter speeds, f-stops and their relationship to ISO and light.
  • Motion Blur and Depth of Field: Understanding these creative tools is the key to more creative photos.
  • Necessary Misc Stuff: Batteries, chargers, memory cards, card readers, filters, caps and hoods.

Taking Control: Exposure modes and focus control

  • Exposure modes: leaving the auto mode and understanding the difference between P-A-S-M, (P-Av-Tv-M).
  • Focusing Modes:  It’s called auto focus but why do some photos still turn out blurry? Learn how to take control of where your camera focuses. 

Beyond the Basics: Light metering, exposure control, camera stability and sensor issues

  • The Light Meter: Understanding how your camera reads and measures light and what causes exposure problems.
  • Exposure Control: Learn about bracketing and exposure compensation.
  • Support and Stability: Learn how to keep your images sharp and vibration free through the use of tripods and monopods.
  • Dust and Cleaning: When to be concerned about lens and sensor dust and how to get rid of it.

Creative Intent: The world of lenses and the artistic elements of photography.

  • Focal Length and Maximum Aperture: How to decipher the numbers on your lens.
  • Lenses: How to select lenses as creative tools. A look at ultra wides, telephoto, zooms, primes and macro lenses.
  • Sensor Sizes: Full frame vs. cropped sensor and what difference it makes to your photography and lens selections.
  • Creative Motion Blur: How to use slow shutter speeds as a creative tool for both low light situations and to purposely blur movement.
  • Composition: A few rules and when to break them.

Private Lesson: One-on-one attention to help your photography grow and improve. For many, the most efficient way to learn about photography is through one-on-one sessions. It’s a great way to learn just what you need, at your own pace and on your own schedule. Cost: $125.00 for a 3 hour session.
