Soar With The Eagles Alaska
Haines is home to the stunning Chilkat River, where the Chilkat Eagle Preserve was established in 1982 with the important mission of safeguarding the largest population of Bald Eagles in the world along with their essential habitats.
This remarkable area spans over 48,000 acres, primarily consisting of river bottom land adjacent to the Chilkat, Kleheni, and Tsirku Rivers, all dedicated to ensuring the survival of this extraordinary congregation of eagles.
The mix of towering Cottonwood trees and impressive Sitka Spruce creates an amazing habitat, and when you throw in the Chilkat River along with the stunning backdrop of the massive St. Elias Range mountains, it’s hard to find a more breathtaking setting.
Each autumn in Haines, Alaska, a spectacular sight unfolds as bald eagles flock to the Chilkat River. The annual salmon run during this season draws these majestic birds, leading to what is considered the largest assembly of bald eagles anywhere in the world.
The sheer volume is breathtaking, with over 3,000 eagles making their way to the area, and it's a common sight to see numerous eagles perched in the trees lining the riverbanks.
For photographers, this is an unforgettable experience that should be on everyone's bucket list.
Just picture the scene: the air filled with the lively calls of bald eagles as you capture the incredible sight of these birds diving and feasting on salmon through your camera lens. It's truly a remarkable experience!
Haines stands out as an exceptionally convenient location for photographers aiming to capture images of bald eagles in their natural habitat.
Each day, we will embark on a brief journey to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where we will dedicate our time to photographing these magnificent birds.
The eagles frequently engage in fierce competition over salmon, providing photographers with numerous opportunities to document these dramatic interactions.
Additionally, the area is characterized by frequent flybys, allowing photographers to seize the moment and capture stunning images of the eagles in flight, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the rugged, snow-capped Takinsha Mountains.
