As you venture through the pristine wilderness, you'll have the opportunity to witness this natural phenomenon in all its glory, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and serene landscapes.
Whether you're capturing the moment with your camera or simply soaking in the magical atmosphere, this adventure promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you in awe of creation's wonders.
Why Choose March?
The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are at their most vibrant during the winter months, specifically from September to March. This period offers extended hours of darkness, creating ideal conditions for observing these stunning natural displays, especially in areas free from light pollution.
In Alaska, the peak times for experiencing the northern lights occur in March and September, coinciding with the equinoxes. During these months, the alignment of the sun with the magnetic field of the Arctic Circle often leads to more intense auroral activity.
However, March is generally considered the better choice for viewing, as the spring season tends to bring clearer skies compared to the often cloudier conditions found in September, which marks the transition into late fall and early winter.
Fairbanks, Alaska:
Greater Fairbanks is an exceptional destination for witnessing the enchanting northern lights, with vibrant displays of yellow, green, red, and even purple illuminating the night sky.
Nestled within the Aurora Oval, a unique ring around the North Pole, Fairbanks enjoys an ideal combination of frequency and activity for these stunning phenomena. Additionally, its continental climate ensures more clear nights compared to coastal regions.
To fully appreciate the northern lights away from urban distractions, we will explore various locations, allowing us to avoid light pollution and capture diverse scenic backdrops in our photographs.
The northern lights are just one highlight of our trip, which is timed to coincide with the new moon, providing one of the darkest nights of the month. This optimal timing enhances the visibility of the aurora, resulting in breathtaking photographs.
While the exact timing and location of the aurora borealis can be unpredictable, we are fortunate to be in one of the best places on earth during an ideal time of year.
We plan to capture the beauty of local landscapes of Fairbanks and, if the weather allows, take photos of ice sculptures at the World Ice Art Championship.
World Ice Art Championship:
Fairbanks hosts one of the biggest ice sculpting competitions globally, showcasing over 70 teams from various countries. Each year, around 45,000 visitors flock to the park to admire these beautifully crafted ice masterpieces.
Aurora Chena Hot Springs Resort:
We travel 60 miles from Fairbanks to an acclaimed resort. It is world renowned for being one of the best places on earth to see the northern lights. The resort is located under one of the most active regions of magnetic fields producing the aurora borealis.
It is away from the light pollution, and the skies are clear more often than those over Fairbanks. We will be there near the vernal equinox when auroras are typically the strongest, as well as during the new moon when the night sky is also the darkest!
The resort has a large, heated mineral indoor pool, the outdoor rock lake and numerous hot tubs provide a great opportunity to soak, swim, or rejuvenate. We will also visit the famous Aurora Ice Museum and Ice Bar.
Snow Coach
On certain nights, we will embark on a cozy journey in a heated snow coach, which will transport us for about 30 minutes to a hilltop where the city lights won’t disrupt our view.
Once we reach the summit, you’ll have the opportunity to step into a warm Mongolian Yurt, where you can relax and sip on a hot drink to fend off the chill. For the next few hours, prepare to be mesmerized by breathtaking 360-degree displays of the Aurora Borealis.
We plan to head back to the resort around 3 AM, or later if the lights are still dazzling us with their beauty.
*Please keep in mind that the snow coach ride can be a bit bumpy, which might pose challenges for those with back problems or other medical conditions.*
